Anyone who is fascinated by the Universe, curious about how black holes are identified, or interested in rockets and satellites will want to know about what鈥檚 happening in Portsmouth and Gosport for (4-10 October).
Astronomers, cosmologists and physicists from the 黑料正能量鈥檚 Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation have teamed up with partners , , satellites and space technology company , and , to host a series of events across the week to celebrate science and technology鈥檚 role in space exploration and understanding.
Events in the programme include:
-
Hands-on space themed activities at including a digital space trail in search of rockets
-
An evening with experts from the University鈥檚 Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation where people can find out about how the discovery of gravitational waves led on to the detection of black hole collisions among other findings
-
Workshops and activities for schools held at Portsmouth Guildhall and led by the University鈥檚 space scientists and some of the leading space industry companies in the south
-
A special screening of Moon (Certificate 15) by No.6 Cinema in Eldon Building with a panel discussion exploring the themes and ideas raised by the movie with leading experts from the 黑料正能量
- Aspex Portsmouth is hosting a family workshop exploring collage making and techniques with local artist duo the Cut-up Club, and a talk on how art and science boost each other

Dr Jen Gupta, from the 黑料正能量鈥檚 Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, is co-ordinating the series of events. She said: 鈥淭his is a fantastic opportunity to share how the 黑料正能量 is playing a leading part in space exploration, discovery and technology, working with partners in the global space industry.
鈥淲orld Space Week not only lets us celebrate this exciting field of space research, it also allows us to inspire the next generation and show that space is for everyone. At the same time, it gives us the opportunity to highlight the incredible research and innovation happening right here in Portsmouth.
鈥淲e have a great range of events and activities to welcome people to, and I hope those who take part will be encouraged to pursue their interest in space exploration!鈥
In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly announced that World Space Week would be held each year from 4 鈥 10 October, commemorating two major milestones:
-
The launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration on 4 October 1957
-
The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, on 10 October 1967
The University is home to a the UK鈥檚 only ESA-accredited provider of space engineering training - and a founding partner of .
It is also developing plans for a Portsmouth Research Institute for Space Missions (PRISM) which will bring all its space activity under one roof, including mission design, and will be closely connected to the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG).
The 2025 World Space Week events demonstrate the University's commitment to public engagement and knowledge sharing. Portsmouth is one of the first universities to develop a Civic Partnership Agreement with partners in the local community and region to promote inclusion and enrich economic, social and cultural life. Its goal is for education and research knowledge and skills to benefit the city and surrounding areas.
