The social media platform TikTok, which currently boasts 2 billion active users worldwide, has become an increasingly prominent part of the true crime industry. Videos tagged with #truecrime have the potential to reach an extensive, global audience, with the hashtag being used over 2 million times on the platform over the past 3 years. Although the contentious and problematic actions of TikTok sleuths have come to define the platform’s relationship to true crime, these users only make up a small portion of a diverse and active true crime community. This talk therefore seeks to focus on how the platform is used to mobilise true crime fans to across the world to engage in a type of ‘action-oriented’ and ethically-minded participation, both as consumers and as content creators.
