Colour in film is evidence of authorship, technology, and cultural context. Yet when original references are lost, restoration shifts from reconstruction to interpretation.

This presentation connects debates in film colour restoration with the urgent digitisation of analogue videotape. As tape degrades and machines disappear, transfer decisions become irreversible. Without documenting how those decisions are made, we preserve images but lose the evidence behind them.

The question is not only how media looked, but how we know.
