Join us virtually to explore the history of US foreign policy.

Understanding US foreign policy can be a complex task - we can see it acting imperially yet it claims to undertake action abroad in the name of human rights and democracy. Taking the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 as the cornerstone of an imperial mindset, the US gradually expanded as a global power from the 1890s and into the twentieth century.

This webinar will examine the basis of American foreign policy ideology in the nineteenth century (in which it claimed to be isolationist) and how this shaped its worldview in the twentieth century with two world wars.

How did the US manage between the great European empires of the nineteenth century (having fought against British rule in the eighteenth century) and how did its own global dominance during the Cold War compare with these imperial histories?

Studying the long view of US foreign policy gives a clear idea why studying history as a discipline can explain modern day issues - and the end of the Cold War consensus we are currently witnessing.
