Considering your options and looking to stay closer to home? Our team is here to help.
Why stay local?
Studying locally has many advantages, such as being near your friends and family, which can make the transition into further study a little easier. Being around home comforts can also help you adjust to your new routine. As well as emotional benefits, you may even save money by staying local. If you choose to continue living at home, then you save on rent and bills. Even if you move into student accommodation, you鈥檒l be able to do the following:
- Stay at an existing part-time job
- Spend less time and money travelling back home
- Have more time for home-cooked meals with your friends and family

Why Portsmouth?
Staying local at Portsmouth uni has its benefits too. Did you know, in 2024 NatWest ranked Portsmouth as one of the top 10 most affordable student cities in their Student Living Index? Also, we have a dedicated team who are available to give you advice on everything from student finance to budgeting advice. We also offer bursaries and scholarships.
Portsmouth is a very commutable city from key locations in the South East with regular train, bus, and boat services. We even have the world鈥檚 only regular hovercraft service from Southsea to the Isle of Wight, opening the door for a mini-island getaway whenever you want. Speaking of getting around, Portsmouth is a largely flat city, so it鈥檚 easy to walk from place to place. There are excellent cycle routes, plus e-scooter and e-bike rental schemes across the city.
We are the only university to offer Connected Degrees - degrees that allow you to do a placement year in either your 3rd or 4th year of study. This unique structure gives you the opportunity to get real-world experience at a time that suits you.
